W&L Men’s Lacrosse is beaten by No. 18 Denison, 11-7

LEXINGTON, Va. — The 18th-ranked Denison men’s lacrosse team hit an eight-goal streak in the second and third periods to claim an 11-7 win over Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Big Red (3-0) led 2-0 early in the first quarter, but the Generals (1-3) scored two of the last three goals in the first quarter to make it 3-2. Second year forward Alex Brown (Norwalk, Conn./Taft School) got W&L on the board with 1:58 left in the first quarter when he scored an assist from the junior midfielder Braden Rhone (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal). The Big Red responded 57 seconds later, but W&L’s freshman forward Hillis is burning (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) scored unassisted with 13 seconds left to make it 3-2 early in the second quarter.

Denison started his run just 16 seconds into the second quarter when junior forward Ethan Tyack netted an assist from sophomore midfielder Nathan Kay. Tyack would assist two more, while Kay himself scored two goals on the run that turned a 3-2 game into an 11-2 game with 5:32 left in the third period.

The Generals recovered from Denison’s run with 1:47 left in the third quarter when Rhone found the back of the net with an assist from the junior midfielder Adam Lambert (Bel Air, Maryland/McDonogh). Rhone’s goal netted a 5-0 W&L run to end the match, but the Blues and Whites’ comeback ran out of time.

Denison beat the Generals, 48-42, and the Big Red also held a 37-30 advantage in ground balls and 12-10 in face-offs. Denison also went 3-for-5 on EMO, while the Generals were 0 for 3.

Rhone led W&L with two goals and an assist, while five others scored one each. senior goalkeeper Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, NJ/Madison) totaled 11 saves.

Denison was led by Tyack, who had two goals and two assists. Kay had two goals and an assist, while sophomore midfielder Clyde Bresnahan had two goals. Senior TJ Spahn stopped 14 shots on goal.

Washington and Lee will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Baldwin Wallace for a contest at 7:00 p.m.
