“We wanted it to be funny”

Sam Raimi isn’t bothered by Tobey Maguire’s famous dance oft-remembered by fans, as the director says the scene was meant to be fun.

One of Sam Raimi’s most memorable moments to come Spiderman 3 is the famous dance scene. Sporting an alternative look that is part of his “Emo Peter Parker” phase, Tobey Maguire dances in a way that makes many viewers laugh while drawing criticism from others. In the years since the release of Raimi’s third Spidey movie in 2007, this scene has been brought back into the spotlight thanks to constant memes, GIFs and edited music videos.

Sam Raimi addressed Maguire’s dance in a new interview with Fandom. The director isn’t offended by so many people finding the dance so funny, especially since the memes have continued to roll out. Raimi says the scene was meant to be funny, although it didn’t seem to have been taken that way by many viewers at the time. Even though the laughs come late, Raimi is now just happy knowing that the scene turned out to amuse so many people all these years later.

“Well, we wanted it to be funny, actually. It was Peter Parker’s version – that lame kid – of what it must be like to be evil himself. But he’s so whipped. He’s so irrelevant that that’s his point of view. And it wasn’t well received by the public. But that’s what we were trying to do. So I’m not surprised that people… I’m glad that people find it funny! We wanted it to be funny.

Spiderman 3 is widely considered by fans to be the weakest of Raimi’s trilogy, as there were many other complaints from critics beyond Peter Parker’s dancing. The bad reviews didn’t help the production on one level Spiderman 4, a sequel that ultimately fell apart with Raimi’s split from Marvel. From there, Spidey was rebooted multiple times with Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland taking over, though all three were united in the hit film. Spider-Man: No Coming Home.
