Watch Olivia Rodrigo and Avril Lavigne’s ‘complicated’ performance

Break out your plaid skirts, black boots and dodgy ties, because Olivia Rodrigo just brought her fans back to the emo-pop era of the early 2000s with the help of none other than Avril Lavigne. Rodrigo just fired her Sour Toured earlier in April, and she’s already making it a can’t-miss gig with additional special guests. During his visit to Toronto on April 29, Rodrigo surprised everyone by bringing the pop-punk icon of the year 2000, Lavigne, on stage. Luckily, fans took tons of videos of Olivia Rodrigo and Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” performance, because it’s definitely something fans don’t want to miss seeing.

There are several reasons why Rodrigo’s surprise collab with Lavigne is so exciting for fans. On the one hand, his first album Sour was heavily influenced by the millennial pop-punk movement of the 2000s, of which Lavigne was the queen. On top of that, Lavigne spoke about Rodrigo in a speech honoring him at the Variety Hitmakers Brunch in late 2021. Although Rodrigo performs a cover of “Complicated” as part of her regular touring setlist, she had never performed the comeback track with Lavigne herself…until now.

As Rodrigo introduced Lavigne, the Toronto crowd was quick to pick up on the mystery guest and erupted in screams as the Canadian pop star came on stage and gave Rodrigo a big hug.

The two singers went on to sing Lavigne’s debut single, “Complicated,” which was released in 2002 and launched her music career.

To really emphasize how special the pop-punk collaboration was, Rodrigo and Lavigne shared photos and videos of their “complicated” performance on Instagram and gushed about each other.

“Toronto last night was special 🥺 thank you very dear @avrillavigne for singing with me. look at you so much 💖,” Rodrigo wrote.

Lavigne raved about Rodrigo in her post about the gig, “I jumped in to sing ‘Complicated’ on stage with @oliviarodrigo in Toronto tonight. It was so sweet to play with you tonight on your tour. SOUR!! Having an amazing tour,” Lavigne wrote. “Sending you so much love.”

by Rodrigo Sour The tour is expected to continue throughout the summer. Along with Lavigne, Rodrigo also surprised audiences with special guests like Conan Gray and covers of songs by Katy Perry and Veruca Salt. You can bet Rodrigo has more surprises in store for her fans, so keep your fingers crossed that she brings out your favorite singer or covers another classic pop song as her tour continues.
