The real winners are Katy Perry and Mickey Guyton

Originally from California, Chayce Beckham may have been the winner of American Idol Season 19 after the final on May 23, but two duets before the winner was announced won our hearts. As the last three performers – Grace Kinstler, Willie Spence and Beckham – waited to see who would be America’s next idol, viewers got a chance to watch two incredibly beautiful duets of none other than country star Mickey Guyton and Idol Judge Katy Perry, who completely stole the show.

In keeping with idol tradition, the finale featured performances from the show’s three judges, Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, as well as runners-up. Perry was joined by Hunter Metts, a Top 7 contender who was knocked out earlier in the season. In a superb clean rendition of her hit song “Thinking Of You” from her 2008 album One of the boys, the two singers played acoustic guitar on a dimly lit stage, giving listeners and viewers a new take on the loving lyrics of the one who escaped.

Before taking the stage for the heart-wrenching performance, Metts took to Twitter to share a snap with Perry, adding the caption, “It’s been an honor.”

In another defining moment, Guyton shared the stage with Top 10 contestant Alyssa Wray for a duet of her hit song “Black Like Me,” a powerful and historic song that received a Grammy nomination for Best Performance. country solo making Guyton the first black woman to receive this honor.

During the performance there was a lovely moment where Guyton kissed Wray in lyrics, changing the lyrics from “Black like me” to “Black like us” by singing, “It’s a hard life on an easy street. , just white painted stakes as far as you can see. If you think we live in the land of the free you should try to be Black like us. Guyton shared that the song was written about the racism, prejudice and discrimination she has faced throughout her life and career in country music.

The three-hour event also gave us performances by Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, Sheryl Crow, and more, including a gorgeous self-love ballad duet “Scars to Your Beautiful” from the songwriter. -performs Alessia Cara and Kinstler, who placed third. .

Earlier this month, ABC announced American Idol would be back for another season in 2022, so we look forward to Ryan Seacrest and the crew to bring us more performances to watch over and over while crying.
