riot party returns to Chicago this year with the kind of quirky, fun programming we’ve come to expect. The resurgence of pop-punk/emo has been strong over the past two years and, with the pandemic largely on the periphery, festivals have benefited of this trend. But Riot Fest has always celebrated punk, alternative rock, emo, hip-hop, and music outside the mainstream gaze. In keeping with that tradition, this year will see headliners from My Chemical Romance, Misfits (with their original lineup) and Nine Inch Nails at Douglass Park on the weekend of September 16.
But frankly, the headliners aren’t even the most interesting attractions here. We’ve been patiently waiting for the MCR reunion for a few years now, and somehow NIN manages to hit the headlines of all the festivals. In smaller letters, we have more exciting news with the to return to of Yeah Yeah Yeahs (which should be a headliner, IMHO).
Listing a small fraction of the rest of the range, there are Ice Cube, Sleater-Kinney, Bauhaus, Descendents, Jeff Rosenstock, Jimmy Eat World, Alice Glass, The Wonder Years, Bully, Sunny Day Real Estate, Yellowcard, The Menzingers, Bleachers, Cloud Nothings, The Linda Lindas, Mannequin Pussy, Action Bronson, Yungblud and Pale Waves. The more I watch it, there’s something for punks and emo fans young and old, as well as pop and hip-hop. A fun and mixed bag indeed.
