David Byrne will present a revised version of his American Utopia Broadway show starting Tuesday, due to several instances of Covid breaking up among her group on stage.
In an Instagram video today (watch it below), Byrne explained that with several band and crew members, he and the remaining Utopia band will be temporarily putting on a new show at the St. James Theater. The new show will feature songs from his Talking Heads era, his solo albums as well as some of the American Utopia Numbers.
In the video, Byrne says that “rather than canceling our shows,” he will “honor our commitment” to ticket holders. “We’re going to do a show which, well, we’re just going to create the show!” Hey, let’s do a show! He described the revised show as “unlike anything we’ve done before.”
In a second Instagram video, Byrne offers a preview of at least one song from the new set list: A repeat of the song “And She Was” can be heard as the camera focuses on a masked member of the group.
The new show – Byrne calls is “Unplugged, or maybe Unchained” – will begin with the performance on Tuesday, December 28 at 8 pm. The unplugged Utopia will then play on the following dates:
- Wednesday December 29 at 8 p.m.
- Thursday December 30 at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.
- Saturday January 1 at 5 p.m.
- Sunday January 2 at 3 p.m.
Byrne says in the video he’s “only going to be doing this for a few weeks and then hopefully we’ll all be back” with the regular. American Utopia Pin up.
