Alberg known for his work with students

CUMBERLAND – The Cumberland school community mourned the loss of elementary school music teacher Joe Alberg this week after his unexpected death on July 8 at his home.

Alberg, 33, son of Philip and Mary Alberg, was a 2006 graduate of Cumberland High School and a member of the Cumberland High School Band, Jazz Band, Chorus and Clef Singers.

“Joe was an elementary music teacher for the Cumberland School Department where he was loved by students and faculties at Ashton and Cumberland Hill Schools,” says his obituary from JJ Duffy Funeral Home.

Some families with students who were taught by Alberg were discussing the possibility of having a vigil in his memory. Many said he loved his students and his work and was a great teacher.

He was a member of the American Band of East Providence for several years.

A celebration of life and calling times took place on Monday and Tuesday of this week and Alberg was to be buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cumberland.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Cumberland High School Band, Attn: Band Director, 2600 Mendon Road Cumberland RI 02864.
